The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has recently launched a web site called sameleopardnewspots.com that is part of an internet and print ad campaign to disparage the name change of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America to the American Association for Justice.
The chamber has launched the campaign into 12 states where trial attorney groups have similarly changed their names.
A story in the Lexington Herald-Leader quoted U.S. Chamber spokesman Bryan Quigley as saying that the chamber’s goal is to “shine a spotlight on the fact that the trial lawyers sort of have brought such disdain on their profession that they had to change their name with the public.”
Critics of the chamber and its public relations campaign argue that the chamber is merely doing the bidding of large businesses — businesses that would love nothing more than to see people’s rights to sue hobbled. The critics see the move as a further push toward an agenda aimed at various tort reforms.
Trial lawyers contend that they make, and have made, the world a safer place through the specter of litigation.
